Start with the reach above your sink
Stand where you normally wash dishes and reach toward the existing latch. A window that is easy to operate in a showroom can be awkward beyond a deep counter. Consider the shortest regular user, the height of the lock and whether you must lean against the faucet to operate it.
- Check whether a crank handle clears the faucet, backsplash and countertop.
- Check access to every lock, including those near the top of a tall sash.
- Plan screen removal and cleaning without standing on a wet counter.
- Photograph decks, walkways, shrubs and fixtures outside the opening.

Plan daylight without ignoring afternoon heat
Compare the proposed glass area and frame layout, not only the outside dimensions. A centre frame can interrupt a garden view; a larger fixed centre section may improve the view while moving ventilation to one side.
For a sunny kitchen, discuss solar heat gain alongside insulation. Ask how the quoted glass suits the direction the window faces, outdoor shading and summer cooking heat. Fresh air and cooking ventilation have different jobs
An opening window can provide fresh air when conditions allow. It should not be treated as a replacement for a properly vented kitchen exhaust system. Cooking produces moisture and pollutants even when it is too cold, noisy or smoky outside to open the window.

Coordinate the window, counter and backsplash
Ask whether the proposed work retains the existing frame or replaces it back to the opening. Deteriorated wood, staining and water damage may change the scope. Decide who handles interior trim, tile edges, exterior finishing and repairs uncovered during removal.
A projecting bay window changes more than the glass. Discuss structural support, exterior space, the interior ledge and any required approvals before treating it as a simple swap. Do not assume the projection becomes usable countertop space.
