What Makes a Quality Entry Door?

Your front door is your home's first impression, primary security barrier, and a major factor in your heating and cooling bills. Choosing the right entry door for Ontario's climate means balancing security, energy performance, and curb appeal - and understanding how each material performs through decades of freeze-thaw cycles.

Ontario homeowners face conditions that are genuinely harsh on exterior doors: temperatures swinging from -30°C in January to +35°C in August, heavy rain and ice in the shoulder seasons, road salt in the air near busy streets, and UV exposure all summer long. A door that performs beautifully in California may warp, swell, or corrode here within a few years if it isn't engineered for our climate.

At Optima Windows and Doors, we manufacture and install entry doors from our Markham facility using materials specifically selected for Canadian conditions. Our two core materials - steel and fiberglass - each suit different priorities and budgets. Here is how to choose between them.

Ontario Climate Tip

Doors are tested to Canadian Standards Association (CSA) ratings for air infiltration, water resistance, and structural performance. Always confirm your door meets or exceeds the CSA A440-08 standard for Ontario's climate zone.

Steel Entry Doors Ontario

Steel entry doors are Ontario's most popular choice for value-conscious homeowners. They offer excellent security, consistent sizing, and an affordable price point - with the trade-off that they can dent and may need repainting every 8-12 years.

Modern steel entry doors are not hollow. They consist of two steel skins (typically 24-gauge or 20-gauge) surrounding a polyurethane foam core that provides insulation. The foam core gives a steel door an R-value of approximately 5-6, significantly better than older wood doors. The steel skin is coated with a galvanized finish and then a factory-applied paint that resists chipping and fading.

Why Choose a Steel Door?

  • Most affordable entry door material - great performance per dollar spent
  • Extremely strong and difficult to kick in or pry open
  • Consistent factory sizing means fewer on-site fitting issues
  • Available in hundreds of panel designs and paint colours
  • Good thermal performance with foam-filled core
  • ENERGY STAR certified options available in our lineup

Steel Door Limitations in Ontario

Steel can dent from impacts - a delivery driver with a cart, a bicycle, or hailstones can leave permanent marks that require touch-up painting. In high-humidity coastal or lakeside areas, any scratch that reaches bare metal can develop rust over time without prompt maintenance. Steel also conducts temperature, which means the door edge and frame can feel cold to the touch in winter, though a thermally broken frame design addresses this issue in quality installations.

At Optima, our steel doors use 20-gauge steel skins (heavier than the standard 24-gauge) and thermally broken steel frames to minimize thermal bridging. All cut edges are primed and sealed during installation to prevent moisture intrusion.

Steel Door Tip

For homes within two kilometres of Lake Ontario or near heavily salted roads, consider our fiberglass options instead. Fiberglass will never corrode regardless of salt exposure and requires less ongoing maintenance.

Fiberglass Entry Doors Ontario

Fiberglass entry doors are the fastest-growing category in Canadian residential construction for a reason: they combine the beautiful texture of real wood with the durability of a material that does not warp, rot, crack, or corrode - ever.

A quality fiberglass door starts with a glass-fibre-reinforced composite skin, typically 2-3 times thicker than a steel skin, embossed with realistic woodgrain texture or a smooth painted finish. The core is filled with high-density polyurethane foam for superior insulation. A fiberglass door typically achieves an R-value of 8-10 - roughly double that of steel and four to five times better than an older wood door.

Why Fiberglass is Right for Ontario

The single biggest advantage of fiberglass in our climate is dimensional stability. While wood absorbs moisture and swells in our wet springs and falls (making doors stick or fail to latch properly), and while steel can expand and contract enough to loosen weatherstripping over time, fiberglass remains stable across the full range of Ontario temperatures. It will not warp in the humidity of August or split in the cold of February.

  • Does not warp, rot, corrode, or split across Ontario's climate range
  • Can be stained like real wood - available in oak, mahogany, and walnut textures
  • Best thermal performance of any entry door material
  • Resistant to dents and scratches from everyday impacts
  • Never requires repainting - factory finish lasts 20+ years with basic cleaning
  • ENERGY STAR certified; eligible for Greener Homes grant rebates

Who Should Choose Fiberglass?

Fiberglass is the right choice for homeowners who want a door that looks exceptional and performs without ongoing maintenance. It is particularly popular for homes with sidelights and transoms, where the door will receive significant natural light and needs to maintain dimensional stability around the glass. It is also the preferred material for heritage-style homes where woodgrain texture and rich stain colours are part of the architectural character.

Entry Door Styles for Ontario Homes

Beyond material, the panel design, glass configuration, and hardware profile determine your door's visual character. Here are the most popular entry door styles in the GTA right now.

Traditional Panel

Classic raised panel layout. Works with any home style from 1960s ranch to 1990s colonial.

Modern / Flush

Clean flat surface with minimal ornamentation. Popular for new-build and contemporary renovations.

Craftsman

Square sticking profile with glass lights in the upper section. Suits bungalows and arts-and-crafts homes.

Arch Glass

Full or half-arch glass insert at the top for a grand entrance. Combines elegance with natural light.

With Sidelights

Door flanked by one or two narrow windows. Dramatically increases natural light in the entrance.

With Transom

Horizontal window above the door. Adds height and light without sacrificing privacy at eye level.

Colour Trends for Entry Doors in 2025-2026

Black front doors have been the dominant trend in Ontario since 2021 and show no sign of slowing. A black entry door creates bold contrast against any exterior finish - brick, stucco, or board-and-batten - and is especially striking paired with black window frames. Navy blue and deep forest green are growing as confident alternatives for homeowners who want colour without the starkness of black. Classic white remains popular for traditional and colonial homes, particularly in Oakville, Burlington, and Mississauga neighbourhoods where heritage architecture is common.

For fiberglass doors, warm woodgrain stains in cognac, walnut, and dark oak are trending as a natural complement to the stone and brick facades popular in new GTA builds.

Entry Door Security Features

Modern entry doors are significantly more secure than the doors installed in most Ontario homes before 2010. Here is what to look for - and what we include as standard versus available upgrades.

Grade 1 Deadbolt

ANSI Grade 1 single-cylinder deadbolt with anti-pick and anti-drill cylinder as standard on all Optima entry doors.

Reinforced Frame & Strike

Heavy-gauge steel reinforcement plates with 3-inch security screws anchor the door frame to the structural framing - not just the trim.

180-Degree Viewer

Wide-angle door viewer (peephole) available upon request. Video doorbell rough-in also available.

Anti-Kick-In Construction

Steel skins on steel and fiberglass doors resist kick-in attacks. Combined with the reinforced strike plate, forced-entry resistance meets or exceeds ASTM F476 standards.

Smart Lock Prep

All Optima entry doors are pre-drilled and compatible with major smart lock systems including Schlage, Kwikset, and Yale Z-Wave models.

Compression Weatherstripping

Multi-point perimeter weatherstripping creates an airtight seal that also improves resistance to forced entry compared to standard pile or foam seals.

Multi-Point Locking Systems

A standard deadbolt secures only one point on the door - typically the latch height. A multi-point locking system engages the door at three or more points simultaneously when the handle is raised: the latch, a point near the top of the door, and a point near the bottom. This distributes force across the entire door height, making the door dramatically more resistant to forced entry and also creating a tighter seal along the full door edge for improved weathertightness.

Multi-point locks are available as an upgrade on all Optima entry doors and are not included as part of the standard door package. They are particularly recommended for exposed doorways, homes in high-crime areas, or any homeowner who wants maximum security and weatherseal performance. Ask about multi-point lock pricing when requesting your free quote.

Upgrade Note

Multi-point locking systems are an optional upgrade and are not included in the standard door package. Multi-point locks start from $949 installed. Ask us about our locks with finger scanner - biometric entry options are available.

Glass and Sidelight Options

Glass inserts, sidelights, and transoms transform an entry door from a functional barrier into a statement architectural feature. The key is balancing natural light with privacy and security.

Door Glass Insert Options

Glass inserts in the door panel itself allow light into your entrance while maintaining the door's structural integrity. Common configurations include:

  • Clear glass: Maximum light transmission; best where privacy is not a concern (doors not facing the street directly)
  • Frosted or satin glass: Allows light while obscuring visibility; popular for glass that faces pedestrian traffic
  • Decorative glass: Etched, beveled, or stained glass patterns; heritage and craftsman styles
  • Privacy glass: Textured glass (reeded, hammered, rain) that is highly private while allowing abundant light
  • Wrought-iron or caming: Internal dividers in a zinc or brass finish applied to the glass surface

All glass inserts are double-pane insulated units with low-E coating to minimize heat loss through the glass. The insulated glass unit inside a door panel typically has a U-value of 1.4-1.8, which is lower (better) than single-pane glass but somewhat higher than the surrounding door slab.

Sidelights

Sidelights are narrow vertical windows flanking the door on one or both sides. They dramatically increase natural light in what is often a dark entrance, and they make the door surround feel grander and more welcoming. Sidelights are available in the same glass options as door inserts, and can be fixed (non-opening) or operable for ventilation.

From a security standpoint, sidelights adjacent to a deadbolt can be broken to reach the lock. We address this with several options: double-cylinder locks (key required from both sides), a deadbolt positioned away from the sidelight, breakage-resistant glass, or non-operable sidelight units with laminated glass.

Transoms

A transom window above the door adds vertical scale to the entrance and brings light deep into the foyer. Transoms come in rectangular, arch, elliptical, and custom shapes. They are particularly popular for double-door configurations and for homes with high ceilings in the entrance. Standard transoms are fixed glass; operable transoms for ventilation are available at an additional cost.

Glass Selection Tip

For doors that face west or south, specify low solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC) glass in the inserts and sidelights. This prevents the entrance from overheating in summer while still transmitting visible light. We can specify the right glass for your door's orientation at no additional charge.

Energy Efficiency for Entry Doors in Ontario

An entry door accounts for up to 10% of a home's total air infiltration and heat loss. Upgrading from an older door to a modern ENERGY STAR certified model can save $150-$350 per year in heating costs in the GTA.

How Entry Doors Are Rated for Energy Performance

Entry doors are rated using the same metrics as windows:

  • U-factor: The rate of heat transfer through the door. Lower is better. ENERGY STAR certified doors for Ontario achieve U-factor of 1.22 W/m²K or lower.
  • Air leakage: How much air infiltrates around the door at a standard pressure differential. Measured in L/s/m². A well-weatherstripped entry door achieves 0.2 or better.
  • Energy Rating (ER): Canada's combined score accounting for U-factor, solar gain, and air leakage. Higher is better for Canadian climate.

ENERGY STAR Certified Entry Doors

All Optima steel and fiberglass entry doors in our standard lineup are ENERGY STAR certified for Canada's Northern climate zone - the most demanding rating applicable to most of Ontario north of Lake Erie. Our triple-pane glass insert options further reduce the U-factor of the overall door assembly, making them eligible for federal Greener Homes rebates.

Canada Greener Homes Grant

ENERGY STAR certified entry doors may qualify for the Canada Greener Homes Grant, offering up to $250 per door as part of a broader home retrofit project. You must obtain a pre-retrofit EnerGuide home evaluation before purchasing. Ask us for details and we will help confirm eligibility for your project.

Weatherstripping and Air Sealing

Even the best-insulated door loses its performance advantage if the weatherstripping fails. Optima uses adjustable multi-point compression weatherstripping on all door frames - the kind that can be re-adjusted over time as the house settles, rather than foam seals that compress permanently and lose their effectiveness. Door sweeps on the bottom are automatically adjusting or removable types that clear low-pile carpeting while maintaining an effective seal against cold and insects.

During installation, we also air-seal the gap between the door frame and the rough opening with low-expansion foam backer rod and sealant, which is where a large portion of air infiltration occurs in older installations where only fiberglass batt insulation was used.
